Renovation of 1941 residence
San Antonio, Texas
Balcones Builders
A tree-lined street of single-story homes informed the horizontal addition that responds to both the scale of the neighborhood and the height of the front yard oak canopy. These trees served as inspiration for the front porch roof structure, a manmade arbor and shelter from the Texas sun that tucks neatly under the branches, redefines the home’s face, and engages the tight-knit community.
Behind the porch a shed structure with clerestory windows opening to the north light and front yard treetops was added. Housed in this volume are a study, powder room, guest room, guest bath, laundry room, master bathroom, and master closet. An alley-accessed carport that doubles as a birthday pavilion was constructed in the back yard along with a retaining wall that allowed the area to be flattened into a level game field for the couple’s two young boys.
