Presenting a stout stone wall to the street, Honimoon House opens dramatically to a central elevated pool court. Flanked by asymmetrical wings, one grounded and the other soaring in response to the cross-sloping lot, this secluded central realm is bordered in the rear by a wall of mature vegetation. It is a private water garden that calms the mind, cools the body, and illuminates this entertaining area after sundown, amplifying both interior and exterior experiences.
A wall of operable glass panels separates the living room from this court, with stone and plaster continuing from the interior past the building envelope to the exterior walls of the projecting wings. Hierarchically prominent, the tall living space is brightened by a band of north-facing clerestory windows. A floating wall of diamond-polished plaster and blackened steel accommodates a fireplace and television on one side as well as a large piece of art and sculpture on the other. The master bedroom cantilevers from the main body of the house and hovers in the rear oak canopy. An inset niche lined with wood panels cradles the bed reinforcing the space’s nest-like nature. The home’s varying intimate and expansive experiences accommodate the numerous rituals, events, and emotions of daily life.
