Vanderpool, Texas
Little Springs LLC
A studio for a ceramic artist, the structure is sited to focus on a dramatic view and to receive the southeastern breeze. The projecting wall and roof planes shield the glass from direct sun and funnel wind into the space. Inside, a work table, prep counter, washbasin, and store room accommodate the artist’s work. Outside, a kiln is cradled by concrete, corrugated metal and a projecting overhang.
The durable palette of materials utilized at both interior and exterior conditions requires little maintenance. While the various metals will oxidize or dull with exposure to the elements, the composite panels will stain, scratch, and spot like saddle leather, adding the story of time and use. With these wood-based panels lining the interior, the building emits warmth at night akin to a large camp fire, giving it a reassuring nocturnal presence in this isolated box canyon.
