This addition to architect William Dukes’ 1963 home and studio fulfills critical requirements of new owners while respecting the expressive original structure. A lower linear wing extends from the main volume encapsulating an existing detached service space. Light monitors relieve compression and allow balanced daylight into the kitchen and study. Largely glass, this appendage mirrors another addition – the long rectangular swimming pool. Aligned with the center of the existing double height great room, this basin is visible via a view-through fireplace inserted into the rear brick wall. New stone paving unifies existing and new as well as interior and exterior spaces reinforcing a continuity inherent to the original plan. An altered arrival sequence through a re-defined entry court that includes a linear water feature, planters, and stone and steel steps are the first hints of the holistic re-charging of Dukes’ residence. All aspects of this deferential undertaking allow the original centerpiece with its branched columns and floating roof to remain the leading voice.
