San Antonio, Texas
A house for a self-described hermit, Dover Soul positions itself a half-level above the street and behind a courtyard wall. One wing, the caretaker’s quarters, projects and peers outward, guarding the approach. The other wing, largely solid facing the street, opens to the parking court and is a cave for cars. These skewed arms of the home, one clad in stucco and the other in charred wood siding, follow the trapezoidal shape of the property and flank the central, light-filled living zone. Views of intimate garden spaces and reflecting pools amplify the serene interior experience and coax the reclusive owner outside.
